Welcome to The Inner Self - a place to explore who you are in community with others.

“The deepest form of despair is to choose to be another than oneself” - Kierkegaard

In my work, I regularly find myself caught in conversations focused on self-improvement, goal-setting, striving, productivity and achievement. Honestly? I used to be a bit obsessed with these things myself. Until I realised that all the qualifications, achievement of goals, and striving never really made me happy, satisfied, or content. I was still riddled with the same level of uncertainty, self-doubt and feelings of ‘not enoughness’ that most people I meet are riddled with.

It wasn’t until I started to look inward and began the work of looking at my life (and myself ) with more compassion and kindness, more acceptance and understanding, that I began to become more friendly toward myself, appreciate who I really am, how I want to feel, who I want to spend time with, what kind of work I want to do, and how I might contribute to the world around me in a way that benefits the collective.

The journey of the inner self might mean reclaiming the lost parts of ourselves, breaking through our perceived limitations or (and) learning to love ourselves wholly and completely so we can bring our unique gifts into the world in a way that feels authentic, real and true.

It’s a journey that leads us home to ourselves. It is how we walk ourselves back into being. And it never really ends, as who we are and what we want for our lives change over time.

I have always been fascinated by the inner world and how it is informed and shaped by the outer world.

This space is a culmination of my years of work with women, many of whom grapple with the same things—imposter syndrome, self-doubt, a loud inner critic, a desperate need to be liked, perfectionism, and fear.

My work is deeply influenced by the writings of Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Mary Oliver, Julia Cameron, Sharon Blackie, Maureen Murdock and many others. My lived experience and years of contemplative and meditation practice also inform it.

This is a place to create a more compassionate, loving, and generous relationship with ourselves. It is a place where I can expand on much of the work I do with my clients one-on-one and in my workshops and retreats in a way that’s accessible to anyone who would like to walk alongside me on the journey.

The Inner Self by Claire Harrison is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

My writing has many themes. At times, it will be deep and contemplative, and at other times, light and joyful. Exploring this work with a light touch can help us navigate the deeper waters of our inner self with a sense of grace, ease, and flow. More than anything, I encourage you to stay curious and open to your inner life.

Each week (and sometimes more often), I’ll share reflections, essays, recommended reading and listening, poetry, practical tools, contemplative practices, guided meditations and journaling prompts, resources, and anything else I’m musing on that I believe will support you.

Free subscribers will have access to weekly letters, whilst paid subscribers will have access to the full archive, as well as additional community benefits, including guided meditations, live calls, journaling reflection prompts, interviews & more, should you feel called to support my work more deeply, and would like to engage with the community through the chat function.

The doors to the world of the wild Self

are few but precious.

If you have a deep scar, that is a door.

If you have an old, old story, that is a door.

If you yearn for a deeper life, a full life, a sane life,

That is a door.

- Clarissa Pinkola Estes

When the door presents itself, may we have the courage to open it and walk through to the other side.
